The picturesque Limerick village of Castleconnell, on the River Shannon, is located just 7 miles from Limerick, amid the ruins of Castle of Connell which was destroyed at the end of the 17th century. In the middle of the 19th century the village staged race meetings, the first of which took place on Tuesday 23rd February 1841. There was a ‘brilliant assemblage of beauty, fashion and rank surrounding the countryside’ to witness the steeplechase which was held on a course starting at Mr Wallplate’s field and proceeding along the Dublin road until, after jumping 12 leaps, the finishing flag was placed back at the start. The only race was a steeplechase which was won by Mr R White’s Lambkin who got the better of Conrod and Lady Flora. The next year a final two day meeting took place on Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th March 1842. |
